Speaker's Center

Dedicated to improving speaking skills, the Department of Communication’s Public Speaking Center is staffed with Public Speaking Mentors who help guide students through the process of preparing and delivering oral presentations. Students taking any course — not just a speech course — or any Faculty/Staff/alumni who need help with presentations are invited to visit the Center for help and guidance with their presentations.

Apprehensive?

Do you experience apprehension when getting ready to speak in front of others? Or even thinking about the possibility of having to speak in front of others? One the BEST methods for reducing this apprehension is to know your subject matter and to practice your speech. A great place to do this is our Speaker’s Center. The assistants have all experienced those same feelings at some point in their speaking lives – so they have an idea of what you may be feeling. Come on down and let them help you start on your road to speaking success….

Speech Mentors

Carly Franklin: Hello! My name is Carly Franklin. I grew up just 20 minutes from Louisville in the small city of Floyds Knobs, Indiana. I am a Junior Communication major here at the University of Louisville. This is my 2nd semester as a Speech Mentor. I am involved with Greek life here at the university, as well as many RSO’s. After my time here at U of L, I will continue to grad school and to become a physicians assistant. I am currently working for an Ophthalmologist! Fun fact: I also love American Sign Language and deaf culture, so if you have any questions feel free to ask! I cannot wait to help you all become wonderful speakers. Here is to a great semester!

Hayley Eisenberg: I am a Junior Communications major with a minor in Jewish Studies. Besides working in the Speaker’s Center, I also work at the Frazier History Museum downtown, as well as at the university library where I archive old recorded interviews and create metadata to go along with it. I am a great listener and can help you with fine-tuning your speeches.

Nic Perry: Leaving town is my favorite hobby. Whether it's going to a different state or different country, travel is pertinent to my mental well being. On these trips, I always have my camera. Portraying the world as I see it for people is one of the best ways I communicate with others. Outside of the Speaker’s Center, I am an intern for Adidas and the UofL Athletics Department in the Creative Photography Department. After I graduate, I plan to move to Seattle to pursue a career in event planning in the entertainment industry as a concert and festival coordinator while continuing to take photos for various outlets around the US and abroad. With my diverse interests I can really help your brainstorm topics and ideas. I look forward to helping you with your speeches.

Hannah Reid: Hello! I’m Hannah. I am currently a senior here at UofL studying Communication. I am originally from Northern KY and went to Cooper HS. My passions include college sports, Netflix, Snapchat, remembering how much cooler I was in high school, and cat videos. I am looking forward to sharing my knowledge of speaking with anyone who stops by the Speaker’s Center! My best piece of advice is to practice, practice, practice.

Abigail Wyleta: My name is Abigail Wyleta, and I’m from Louisville, KY. I am a senior Communication major with an interest in Public Relations and Event Planning. When I’m not helping in the speaker’s center, I enjoy concerts, traveling, cooking, fashion, and cheering on the Cards! I wanted to be a speech mentor to help students become more confident in their public speaking skills. Public speaking is important for any major and career field, and I hope to help in any way I can.

Katherine Taylor: Katherine is faculty coordinator of the Speaker’s Center.
