Last year’s WorldFest festival drew more than 60,000 people and featured entertainment on three stages, a new World of Children area for school-aged visitors and their families, and a diverse array of crafts, services and food. This year’s WorldFest will be even larger, building on a tradition and commitment to diversity in our community. Anticipated attendance is 100,000+ people. WorldFest began as an event to kick-off the work of the Mayor’s International Heritage Month in September 2003. The original one-day festival featured a limited amount of vendors, exhibitors and entertainment between 11am to 6pm and drew 5,000 people in its first year. From its humble roots, WorldFest has grown into a two-day affair held each Labor Day weekend on the historic Belvedere in the heart of downtown Louisville. The festival has grown to include over 150 vendors and exhibitors, interactive cultural pavilions, a children’s area, continuous entertainment provided over 24 hours of the event and guests from all over the world. It is one of two Mayor’s Signature Events including Light Up Louisville. This position will be in charge of managing press relations and marketing for WorldFest including revising the existing marketing and press plans. The intern will gain hands-on experience in organizing press events, writing press releases, creating marketing pieces for print, radio and television and other related tasks as assigned. The student will develop a marketing plan for the East Kentucky Science Center in Prestonsburg, KY. The Science Center is located on the campus of Big Sandy Community and Technical College. The Science Center services school groups, the general public of eastern KY, and tourists. The goal of the plan will be to increase the number of visitors to the Science Center. The Science Center has a limited advertising budget and thus also needs to have a low cost method of increasing the awareness of the Science Center activities to the public. The facility includes a planetarium with educational programs and entertaining laser shows. We also have a 3,000 square feet exhibit hall and 800 square feet classroom.
