University of Kentucky Henry Clay, Vanderbilt University Invitational and Wayne State University Intercollegiate Debate Tournaments
Louisville, KY (October 30, 2006) — October was a busy month for the University of Louisville Malcolm X Debate society. We traveled to Lexington, KY for the 36th annual Henry Clay Debate Tournament, where 125 teams from around the country competed from Friday, October 6th through Sunday, October 9th. Two teams from Louisville competed at U.K., including Aaron Price (senior) and Rosie Washington (sophomore), who finished 5-3, and Stacy Bradley (senior) and Tiffany McCollum (freshman), who finished 2-6. Aaron Price also placed 8th for Novice Speaker.
Three teams also traveled to Vanderbilt University's Annual Invitational, which took place from Friday, October 20th through Sunday, October 21st. In the Varsity division, Ebony Rose (sophomore) and Jason Walker (sophomore) finished 3-3; Brian Huot (sophomore) and Mary Mudd (senior) finished 1-5, with Mary Mudd coming in 8th place for Top Speaker; and Stacy Bradley and Tiffany McCollum also finished 1-5.
Finally, during the last weekend in October, three teams comprised of Brian Huot and Mary Mudd, Richard Funches (freshman) and Marian Kennedy (freshman), and Aaron Price and Rosie Washington traveled to Wayne State University's Motor City Classic Debate Tournament. Price and Washington finished 5-3, while the other teams both finished 1-7. Price and Washington also advanced to quarterfinals in their most successful debate of the season where they also placed 6th and 3rd for Top Speaker, respectively.
Overall this has been a busy month, but it has also been rewarding. We've challenged a lot of the conventions of the debate community, and we've learned how to better prepare ourselves for the types of confrontations that ensue whenever one is advocating major change to a stagnant system. For the month of November, we plan to come home with even better results from James Madison University, Wake Forest University and Appalachia State University.
