2006-2007 Season Prospectus
The UofL Debate Society will continue its success as it steps into the 2006-2007 academic year with five returning debaters: Stacy Bradley, Brian Huot, Ebony Rose, Jason Walker and Rosie Washington. Joining the team this year will also be two first year seniors -- Mary Mudd and Aaron Price -- along with a host of incoming freshman including LaVon Clark, Richard Funches, On'Draya Green, Juan Holloman, Marian Kennedy, Doug Lattimore, Tamara Leach and Arie'L Sickles.
The 2006-2007 debate topic will center on arguments that the United States Supreme Court should overrule one or more of the following decisions:
1) Planned Parenthood v. Casey, 505 U.S. 833 (1992).
2) Ex parte Quirin, 317 U.S. 1 (1942).
3) US. V. Morrison, 529 U.S. 598 (2000).
4) Milliken v. Bradley, 418 U.S. 717 (1974).
The teams will be traveling several times during the next two semesters to tournaments throughout the nation, where we will compete against several top universities including Emory, Dartmouth, Harvard and Northwestern. We will begin our season at Georgia State on September 23rd, so keep an eye out for those tournament results.
In addition to the debate tournaments, we will also continue to host the Public Debate Series here on Belknap campus. The topics for October and November will include:
1) October - Race should not be a determinant for school placement.
2) November - Debate is not empowering for black students.
Finally, our continuous efforts to change the face of debate have brought us great success as well as many challenges. As we approach our annual retreat, which will take place next week, we all anticipate the challenges that this coming season will bring. We also plan to take our success with us as we expect it flourish during the Fall 2006 season, during which we will continue our efforts to expand the diversity of the debate community.
